JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Cristiano Ronaldo has scored two goals as the Portugal national team defeated Hungary 3-0 in the preliminary round of Group F of the Euro 2020 at the Puskas Area in Budapest, Hungary, on Wednesday (06/16/2021) early morning Indonesian western time.
The two goals scored by Ronaldo added to his tally of 11 goals, surpassing the record of French football legend Michel Platini as the top scorer in the European Cup finals.
Ronaldo and Platini held a record of nine goals before the tournament, but Portugal's two late goals against Hungary added to his tally.
Ronaldo missed a golden opportunity in the first half of the match when he fired from close range.
However, when he had another chance from the penalty spot in the 87th minute, Ronaldo made no mistakes.
He slotted the ball into the corner of the net and staged his trademark celebration that sparked an uproar from the 67,000 crowd of mostly Hungarian supporters.
There was still time to add a second goal in injury time at the end of the second half as Ronaldo met a cross near the penalty area and past several home defenders and goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi to score.
The 36-year-old also extended his record as the only player to score in five different Euro finals, as well as the most games, when the game against Hungary became Ronaldo's 22nd game since his debut in 2004.
