JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - The European Union, through its embassy in Jakarta, has introduced a package of "Fit for 55" proposals under the European Green Deal that targets the European continent to be a climate neutral region by 2050.
In a media briefing held from Jakarta on Wednesday (07/21/2021), the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Indonesia Vincent Piket said that the proposal was launched by the European Commission, which is the executive part of the European Union, on 14 July.
"(Fit for 55) includes climate, energy, land use, transport, taxation, as well as all elements that contribute to the EU's fundamental goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions, first by 55 percent by 2030, compared to levels in 1990, and the goal with a longer term to realize net zero emissions by 2050," said Ambassador Vincent Piket.
If this goal is achieved, Europe will become the world's first climate-neutral continent.

Piket explained that the package contained 13 legislative proposals, of which eight existing regulations were further strengthened and five new policies introduced.
The package also directs that the European Union can achieve its climate targets by 2030 in a fair, cost-effective and competitive manner.
In addition, the transition to a greener EU is also expected to create various opportunities, in which the package also proposes various ways to support the vulnerable by addressing inequality and energy poverty.
The policy reshuffle will then have an impact on international trade activities, so the EU needs to design a carbon border adjustment mechanism that is in line with World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations and with other international obligations of the EU, as reported by Antara.
