JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Roger Federer's dream of equaling a record nine Wimbledon titles was dashed following his 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-0 quarter-final loss to Poland's Hubert Hurkacz on Wednesday(07/07/2021).

Prior to the fortnight's tournament, 14th seed Hurkacz had won just four matches on grass court. However, no one expected that despite his lack of experience on grass, he put in a stunning game against his childhood idol.

The cheers and standing ovation from the crowd did not save Federer from the onslaught on Center Court that day when the 39-year-old tennis player was defeated.

Federer's forehand on the tramline gave Hurkacz the biggest win of his career, as fans were stunned to find it could be the Federer's last appearance at Wimbledon.

There was no crueler way than losing 6-0 in the final set in Federer's 22nd appearance of the tournament.

Federer, a record holder of 20 Grand Slam titles, is chasing Martina Navratilova's record nine titles at the All England Club.

"I don't know if we'll ever see that great guy here again," said former champion Boris Becker, voicing the concern of the thousands of fans who packed the All England Club to watch Federer, as well as the millions of viewers on television.

Hurkacz was just two when Federer made his Wimbledon debut in 1999, and six when the Swiss won his first Grand Slam title in 2003.

He will be hoping to keep up his winning streak at the tournament, where he not only beat Federer but also knocked out world number two Daniil Medvedev a day earlier.

"It's very special for me to play on this special court against Roger, it's a dream come true," said the 24-year-old, who will face either Matteo Berrettini or Felix Auger Aliassime for a place in the final, as reported by Antara.

"I'm very proud and very happy to be here. I can't wait for the next one."

When asked if he thought he could win, Hurkacz replied: "Probably not".
