JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - John Legend, along with three other singers representing the world's continents, sang John Lennon and Yoko Ono's song 'Imagine' in a video played at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday night (07/23).

The song 'Imagine,' which carries a message of peace, was sung first by the child singers in the Suginami Junior Choir, followed by two singers representing Africa and Europe, respectively.

Appearing in the video with a white background, John Legend represented America. Also featured is country singer Keith Urban who represented Oceania.

As the video plays, the drones formed the Olympic emblem in the sky above the Tokyo National Stadium, and then transformed into a globe.

Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, Seiko Hashimoto, in his remarks hoped that the Olympics could bring a moment of peace for those who live far from peace, especially in the current pandemic condition.

"With the difficult situation globally due to the coronavirus pandemic, I would like to express my respect and gratitude to the medical personnel and all those who are working hard every day to overcome these difficulties," Hashimoto said, as reported by Reuters on Friday (07/23/2021).

The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics was held without spectators at 20.00 local time. Taking place in the era of the pandemic, the organizers cut the number of guests, and only about 900 people attended the ceremony, including officials, invited guests, and journalists, as reported by Antara.
