JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Former world number one Karolina Pliskova has reached the Wimbledon final for the first time after coming back from a first set loss to defeat second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals in London on Thursday (07/09/2021).

The Czech advances to Saturday's final to seek her first Grand Slam title after having to settle for second to Angelique Kerber at the 2016 US Open.

In the final, Pliskova will face world number one Ashleigh Barty, who defeated Kerber in the other semifinal. Barty will also be playing her first ever Wimbledon final.

29-year-old Pliskova struggled against Sabalenka, who was the first top seeded opponent she has faced at the tournament this year, and that showed when she lost the first set on the only break point she faced by double-faulting her serve.

Pliskova made the breakthrough against Sabalenka's powerful serve, whose speed is up to 193km/h, to snatch a break midway through the second set which she won to equalize in the match.

The 23-year-old Sabalenka, who is also playing in her first semifinal at a Grand Slam tournament, struggled to maintain consistency, hitting 18 aces but making 20 unforced errors, including one that cost her serve in the decider.

Despite Sabalenka's comeback, Pliskova did not appear to be in any danger, rarely struggled to pick up points on her own serve and finally booked her place in the final of the tournament with an ace, as reported by Reuters and monitored by Antara.
