Air Pollution May Cause Good Cholesterols to Turn Bad

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - A latest research has found that air pollution may lower the levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as the good cholesterols, and turn them into bad cholesterols. The changing of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol contributes to the clogging of the arteries that increases the risk of heart disease.

Inhaling smoke pollution may alter the structure of HDL in the body. In addition, these activities also enable other components resulting in oxidation of the early damage cells and tissues that trigger inflammation and hardening of the arteries.

These findings have been published in the Journal of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. The lower level of the HDL was observed with high levels of air pollution.

"It can make a person have a higher risk for cardiovascular disease," said lead author Griffith Bell of the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle, as quoted from the pages of The Indian Express.

In a study of 6,654 middle-aged adults and older in the United States from diverse ethnic backgrounds, participants who live in areas with high levels of air pollution related to traffic tend to have low HDL levels. Higher exposure to particles during the three months was associated with a lower HDL particles, the researchers said.

Changes in HDL levels may appear after a short exposure to medium or long against air pollution, the authors note. Men and women respond differently to air pollution. While HDL is lower at higher pollution exposures for both sexes, but is greater in women.

The findings are part of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, a US study to examine the lifestyle factors that predict the development of cardiovascular disease.
