JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Brentford has signed Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka from Danish side Midtjylland on a five-year contract, the Premier League-promoted club said in a statement, as reported by Reuters on Tuesday (07/20/2021).
The 23-year-old midfielder is the first player Brentford has signed in its new status as a Premier League club. Onyeka spent his entire professional career at Midtjylland, where he made his debut in 2017.
Onyeka made 123 appearances and scored 17 goals while in Denmark. Midtjylland won the 2019-2020 Danish Super League, and Onyeka also led the team to the 2017-2018 league title and the 2019 Danish Cup.
"We think he is a strong addition to this squad, and we look forward to working with him. He is a very dynamic player," Brentford manager Thomas Frank told the club's website.
"He is from the Danish league, and being one of the best midfielders in the league, we think he has the potential to develop further. All the coaches here are looking forward to working with him and pushing him to a higher level."
Onyeka has only played for Nigeria once in a friendly against Algeria in October.
Brentford, who ended a 74-year wait for the Premier League after beating Swansea City 2-0 in the Championship playoff final in May, will host Arsenal in their maiden Premier League game on August 13, as reported by Antara.
