DUBAI, NETRALNEWS.COM - Iran's government said on Tuesday (07/27) that its security forces had arrested a network of agents working for Israel, and had also seized weapons.
Iran said the weapons were planned to be used during the recent unrest sparked by the country's water shortage, according to Iranian state media reports, as reported by Reuters on Tuesday (07/27/2021).
The Iranian government often accuses its enemies or rivals abroad, such as Israel, the United States, and Saudi Arabia, of trying to destabilize the country by fomenting protests and violence.
The announcement of the agent's detention and confiscation of weapons came on Tuesday after protests over water shortages had lasted for nearly two weeks.
The protests took place mostly in southwestern Iran, in which the protests have turned political and spread to other areas.
Iranian authorities have accused armed dissidents of provoking clashes during street protests. Human rights groups say security forces have opened fire on the protesters.
"Mossad operators intend to use the equipment in riots and assassinations in urban areas," an Iranian intelligence ministry official said, according to reports carried by Iranian state media. However, the official did not provide details.
Mossad is Israel's intelligence agency.
The weapons seized included pistols, grenades, assault rifles, and ammunition, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. He also added: "Some of these (weapons) were used to provoke clashes during the protests."
So far there has been no immediate comment from Israeli officials, as reported by Antara.
