TUNIS, NETRALNEWS.COM - Tunisian police fired tear gas on Friday to disperse protesters in the Sejoumi neighborhood. The protest emerged after a video showing police stripping and beating a young man sparked widespread anger.
The video sparked criticism from political parties and human rights organizations. Tunisian Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi said the officers involved were dismissed from duty and the unacceptable incident was being investigated, as reported by Antara.
On Friday night, witnesses told Reuters protesters blocked roads, burned tires and threw stones at police, and officers responded with tear gas and chased demonstrators through the streets of Sejoumi.
Protesters chanted slogans protesting the police and the government.
A decade after a revolution against poverty, injustice and a police state, Tunisia has made progress towards democracy. However, its economic problems have worsened, with the country on the verge of bankruptcy and public services in dire circumstances.
Human rights activists have complained of repeated police abuse, such as the incident in the capital that was caught on camera.
Tunisian President Kais Saied expressed his anger in a meeting with the prime minister, and he also met with residents in Sejoumi.
