JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Milos Raonic has withdrawn from this month's Wimbledon championship to fully recover a calf injury, the 2016 runner-up said.
The former world number three tennis player last played at the Miami Open Masters 1000 in March, where he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the last 16 before missing out on his entire clay court season, including the French Open.
"I want to share that I'm incredibly sad and hurt that I wasn't ready to compete at Wimbledon this year," world number 18 Raonic said in an Instagram post Saturday night (06/19/2021).
Raonic said he was targeting a return to action at a major grass court tournament, but could not heal the injury in time.
"I've been working hard to heal this, but suffered a minor setback," Raonic said.
"Therefore I will not be ready for Wimbledon. I will work hard to return as soon as possible."
Former champion and 20-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal and world number two Naomi Osaka have also withdrawn from Wimbledon.
Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will return to its usual slot this year, with the first match starting on June 28, as reported by Antara.
