Millennial Generation Supports Implementation of Digital Economy

Indonesia Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto (special)

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - The Indonesia Ministry of Industry continues to encourage the improvement of the competence of human capitals (HR) in entering the era of industrial revolution 4.0.

The program, in the form of reskilling (training in new capabilities) and upskilling (capacity building), is the key to developing quality human resources in implementing the digital economy.

"Therefore, the government focuses on encouraging young people including the millennial generation in the country to understand the digital world," said Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto in Jakarta.

Minister of Industry assesses, millennial generation plays an important role in implementing industry 4.0. Moreover, Indonesia will enjoy a demographic bonus period until 2030. This means that as many as 130 million productive-aged people can take new opportunities to develop business in the digital era.

"So reskilling and upskilling is needed because economic digitalization requires skill sets that are different from the previous economy. So, our young people need to understand or literate the digital world, "he explained.

In facing the digital industry era, the government also targets the creation of 1,000 technopreneur by 2020, with business valuations reaching USD100 billion and total e-commerce value of USD130 billion.

"At present, Indonesia already has four unicorns, and they all grow up not part of the 'conglomerate' so as to form a strong new entrepreneur," he said.

However, according to Airlangga, there are at least three knowledge that must be mastered by the millennial generation, namely English, coding, and statistics. "In the digital industry, the language used is coding, both in the ecosystem of Android and IoS. Then it is also used in internet of things and artificial intelligence, "he added.

Meanwhile, statistics is important because of understanding knowledge of data. Moreover, in the digital economic era, big data parts are never separated. "These knowledge must be mastered by our young people, so that they can enter into a large digital economy," he said.

Then, the government encourages the development of coworking space to provide opportunities for young people to be more creative and innovative. Because, technology in the era of industrial revolution 4.0 is different from the previous era. "In the 4.0 industrial revolution, the economy is no longer based on capital but is based on HR," explained the Minister of Industry.

Airlangga added, the government also continues to invite young people throughout Indonesia, to get equal opportunities to contribute and play an active role in the digital industry era. "Industry 4.0 encourages the government to empower human talents. So, we are encouraged to focus on strengthening our young generation with technology and innovation, "he said.

Minister of Industry believes that the existence of coworking space can create young talents who can compete in the digital industry era. This effort has been made in several regions through cooperation with universities. A number of regions already have these coworking spaces, including in Bandung, Batam, Bali, Makassar and Palu.

"Even this Coworking space will be encouraged by the Palapa Ring network and infrastructure digitalization, which are targeted to be able to finish reaching Papua. If this can work, I am optimistic that talents in the region can grow, especially those close to universities, "he explained.
