US-China Trade War Creates New Opportunities for Indonesia

Indonesia President Joko Widodo (setkab)

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Indonesia President Joko Widodo has received a visit from the management of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (Hipmi). The meeting took place at the Merdeka Palace on Wednesday (6/12/2019) in Jakarta.

In his introduction, the Head of State said that he wanted to get input from business people, and also wanted to know the conditions and difficulties found in the Indonesian business world.

"I ask for input, but I don't need to have much, about one to three concrete [inputs] that we can do. I can work, [and know] what the employer wants," said the President.

In addition, the Head of State also discussed the current conditions regarding the United States and China trade war.

Despite causing a global economic turmoil, the President held that the trade war actually created opportunities for Indonesia which could be utilized properly.

"Don't look at it [trade war] as a big problem. In my opinion, it is an opportunity that we can take from the height of this trade war. I see you, mother, and brothers all on the front line in taking advantage of this opportunity, "he said.

The President continued, the imposing of import duties on Chinese products by the United States government in the trade war, for example, could be used by Indonesia to engage the US markets.

He called Indonesia must be able to expand the export of its products to the United States.

"I see, for example, like the market in America which previously received products from China, this could be our opportunities to be able to increase capacity so that our products can enter there," said the President.

Present at the meeting included Special Staff Coordinator President Teten Masduki, Special Staff of President Ari Dwipayana, Indonesian Chamber of Commerce General Chairman Rosan Roeslani, and Chairperson of the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association Bahlil Lahadalia.
