Economic Recession in Other Countries is an Opportunity for Indonesia

Indonesia President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo (setpres)

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Indonesia President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo says Indonesia must be able to create innovations and various breakthroughs in the current challenging global economic situation.

Jokowi said some countries are even experiencing economic setbacks, and there are also countries that have experienced a recession. Such conditions are expected to be an opportunity for Indonesia to develop faster.

"We must use [the economic] setbacks in several regions as an opportunity for us to be able to leap forward," President Jokowi said.

He continued that with a population of around 600 million, ASEAN is a major global economic power. ASEAN has proven itself as a stable region, and even becoming a region with amazing economic growth.

However, President Jokowi stressed that to be able to grow even bigger, "we need more synergy, and ASEAN countries must help one another, including among the existing engineers."

"I am delighted that there has been a mutual recognition agreement between engineers in ASEAN, so that there are the same competency standards among countries, and allows easier mobility of engineers across countries in ASEAN," he said, as reported on the official website of the Cabinet Secretariat.

President Jokowi said each ASEAN country has its own strengths, and associations such as CAFEO could facilitate its members to share experiences and knowledge, and work together with one another.

The President also said that ASEAN proved to be quite successful in various fields, including 10 unicorns from ASEAN, in Indonesia including Gojek, Tokomedia, Bukalapak, Traveloka, and many more great works by engineers.

He hopes this collaboration will not only be between engineers but also between engineering and other fields of science. Because to give birth to new innovations that boost economic growth, engineers certainly need other skills.
