Media Expected to Play Role to Prevent Spread of Radicalism, Terrorism

Media Discussion of 'Preventing Radicalism of Terrorism'

JAKARTA, NNC - The mass media, including print, electronic and online, are expected to help prevent the spread of radical or terrorism. Lest they become channels which continue the terror through reporting that is not in accordance with ethics.

Chairman of the Press Council Yosep Adi Prasetyo said the Press Council and National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) had signed a memorandum of understanding on the MoU regarding terrorism reporting.

"The MoU departs from concern, because the media has direct access to cover terrorist arrests [live broadcasts]," Yosep said in a discussion with media crew with the theme 'Preventing Radicalism of Terrorism' at Mercure Hotel, Sabang, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (9/25/2018).

He continued there were no more live reports abroad. All broadcasts are delayed until the arrest is complete. "When the arrest was over, it is broadcast. These are the seconds when the apparatus paralyzed the suspects. Here, it is not [like that]," he said.

He analogized imagine if there was a terrorist group controlling a building, then was covered by the live broadcast. Of course the perpetrators do not need a lot of troops to anticipate the actions of the authorities because they only watch live broadcasts through television.

"He will know where the troops are moving from, trying to break the door from where, just prepared a retaliatory action to overcome that. In some countries, live broadcasts then thwart operations and attempts by the authorities to arrest. So there should be no live broadcasts anymore," he explained.

In addition, some media in Indonesia, if seeing that there is one tragedy, tends to over-expose it so that it continues to terrorize the public.

"Blood was exposed, the person died, his head bounced off, his body if needed was shown. The terrorist had already died, but the message of terror was passed on by the media. Making people afraid, making the shops close for being afraid, because there will be a flock ready to do follow-up action," said Yosep.

Yosep asserted that the media should not continue to terrorize the community because, quoting the statement of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, "the media is oxygen of terrorism" which means the media is oxygen that can revive the terror.
