Rudiantara on Temporary Restrictions on Social Media Access (victory)

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Indonesia Minister of Communication and Information Rudiantara says the government has temporarily put on restrictions on social media access as a follow-up to the riots that occurred in Jakarta, on Tuesday (5/21) morning.

He said the restriction was in accordance with the Information and Electronic Transaction Law (ITE), while also preventing the circulation of hate speech and hoax content.

"The ITE Law (information and electronic transactions) has two main points. First, to improve literacy of capacity, capacity, capability, and society digital-wise. Second is the management of content that includes restrictions, "Rudiantara said on Wednesday (05/22/2019).

These restrictions were made on several social media platforms, especially those related to the content upload process that could trigger a murky atmosphere on Wednesday.

"Features on social media and messaging systems that are viral are fast, which emotionally can directly be sent to us, namely photos and videos," he said.

Based on monitoring, since 13.00  Indonesian western time, Instagram is difficult to access. Whatsapp message sharing services also experience delays, especially for sending pictures, and not even accessible.

Internet users also said that it was difficult to access the Facebook platform.
