JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Website and social media operators will be sanctioned by the Ministry of Communication and Information if they do not filter hoax content on their pages.

Director General of Application and Information Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan said the punishment given consisted of administrative sanctions, fines and page closure.

"In fact, if (the operator) continues to allow them to be subject to article (criminal) participation," Semuel said in Jakarta, Saturday (05/25/2019).

The sanctions, according to Semuel, will apply when the revision of Government Regulation Number 82 of 2012 concerning the Implementation of Systems and Electronic Transactions (PP PSTE) is ratified.

"We are revising PP 82 and the regulation requires platforms (site operators and social media) to actively clean hoaxes," Semuel explained.

The step to filter hoaxes was increasingly active by Kominfo after many hoaxes spread on social media during the riots on May 21-22.

Kominfo noted that during the incident, 30 hoaxes were spread to cyberspace through thousands of pages (URLs) consisting of 450 Facebook accounts, 151 Instagram, accounts, 784 Twitter accounts, and 1 Linkedin account.

It was also suggested that Warganet immediately delete false news that was published or distributed through their social media accounts.
