JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - The Indonesia Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned the public of the potential for high waves in a number of Indonesian waters. The wave height is estimated to reach 1.25 to 6 meters.

This was conveyed by the Department of Public Relations and the Bureau of Law and Organization of the BMKG, as stated in a written statement received by

This increase in high waves is caused by circulation patterns in the north of the Halmahera Sea. Wind patterns in the northern part of the equator generally blow from the east - southeast at speeds of 4-15 knots, whereas in the south the equator generally blows from east - southeast at speeds of 4 - 25 knots.

Tanimbar, southern waters of Kep. Kei - Kep. Aru, Arafuru Sea, Waters of Yos Sudarso - Merauke. This condition resulted in an increase in wave height around the area.

From the results of monitoring by BMKG, several regions that have the potential to experience wave surges as high as 1.25 to 2.5 meters (medium) of which are the East Waters of P. Simeulue, East Waters Kep. Risky modes of transportation include fishing boats (wind speeds of more than 15 knots and wave height above 1.25 m), barges (wind speeds of more than 16 knots and wave height above 1.5 m), ferry (wind speed is more than 21 knots and wave height above 2.5 m), and large vessels such as cargo ships / cruise ships (wind speeds of more than 27 knots and wave height above 4.0 m).
