Semarang Targets Obtaining World Heritage City Status from UNESCO (kemenpar)

SEMARANG, NETRALNEWS.COM - Realizing the huge potential of tourism in the Kota Lama area, Deputy Mayor of Semarang, Hevearita Gunaryanti has requested the support of the Minister of Tourism so Semarang's Kota Lama would get the status of World Heritage City.

Hevearita said the Kota Lama area of ​​Semarang is now clean from illegal buildings, and is no longer rundown. With an area of ​​around 60 hectares and housing around 117 cultural heritage buildings, currently 80 percent of the buildings in the Kota Lama of Semarang have been revitalized.

"We hope the Ministry of Tourism can assist in setting up many attractions in Kota Lama as support. We want Kota Lama to become a world class destination," Hevearita said.

The request was welcomed very positively by the Indonesia Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya. He said: "If you want to make Kota Lama a world class destination, you must use a benchmark, and  world-class professionals. Arief also said that the Kota Lama plan should be an Integrated Tourism Masterplan.

"Create a team involving the Ministry of Tourism. We will support Kota Lama to get UNESCO World Heritage status," he said.
