Police to Investigate If Matches Factory that Caught Fire Employed Children (kabarmedan)

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Police are still investigating the possibility of a matches factory on Jalan Tengku Amir Hamzah, Sambirejo Village, Binjai, Langkat, which which caught on fire on Friday (21/6), of employing children.

"It is also possible that the testimonies of the witnesses can add to sufficient evidence that will lead to it," said the Head of the Public Information Bureau at the Indonesia National Police (Polri) Public Relations Division, Brigadier General Dedi Prasetyo at Polri Headquarters in Jakarta, Monday (6/24/2019).

Dedi, as quoted by Antara, said that investigators would coordinate with the local Manpower Office and communicate with the Indonesian Child Protection Commission of North Sumatra.

There are already three people named as suspects, Indra Marwan, a West Jakarta resident as the business owner, Burhan (36), a resident of Sunggal Subdistrict, Deli Serdang Regency as Operational Manager, and Risma (43), a resident of Sunggal Subdistrict, Deli Serdang District as Personnel Manager.

All three were charged with Article 359 Jo 188 of the Criminal Code with the threat of a maximum sentence of five years.

Meanwhile, a total of 30 victims died in the incident, 25 of whom were adults and five were children.

Indonesia Minister of Manpower M. Hanif Dakhiri instructed the labor inspection team from the central and regional levels to investigate the event of a matchstick factory which killed 30 workers, in Binjai, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra.

"Labor inspectors in the area are already on the site. The team from the center is coming soon. The incident must be seriously investigated," Hanif said through a press release from the Ministry of Manpower, Friday

Hanif said, at the initial stage, the supervisory team and the police focused on handling victims. Next, the team will conduct an inspection regarding its employment aspects.
