Gov't Blocks Data Services in Papua and West Papua to Accelerate Recovery (africadecisions)

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - In the effort to accelerate the process of restoring security and order in Papua and surrounding areas, and after coordinating with law enforcement officials and related agencies, the Indonesia Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has decided to temporarily block the telecommunications data service.

"The [data services] blocking is valid until the atmosphere in Papua returns to being conducive and normal," acting Head of Public Relations Bureau at the Ministry of Communication Ferdinandus Setu in Jakarta, yesterday.

Previously, the Ministry of Communication and Information had been throttling or slowing down access/bandwidth in several areas of West Papua and Papua, where mass protests took place on Monday (19/8). The protests, in which several became violent, occured in Manokwari, Jayapura, and several other places.

The data access slowdown has been carried out in stages since Monday (8/19) at 13:00 Indonesian Eastern Time, and normalized again at 20.30 the same day, following an already conducive situation.

"We can say that the purpose of throttling is to prevent the widespread of fake news or hoax that can trigger protests," Ferdinandus explained.

So far, according to Ferdinandus, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has identified two fake news or hoax that had spread through social media and instant message services, namely the fake news showing a photo of a Papuan student killed by law offers in Surabaya, and the fake news that said that the Surabaya Police had abducted two food delivery people that were delivering food for Papua Students.
