Social Affairs Minister Shares Story of Growing Up in Betawi Neighborhood (kemensos)

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Indonesia Minister of Social Affairs Juliari P Batubara has handed over 5,000 packages of food assistance from the Presidential Social Assistance program to Betawi Deliberation Board (Badan Musyawarah Betawi/Bamus). The food packages are set to be delivered to communities affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Minister said that when he attended the Betawi event, he felt that he was "at home," as Juliari was born, lived, and raised in Jakarta. Since kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school, until high school, he went to school in the Tebet area.

"I used to hang out and spend time with the Betawi children. Most of my friends are Betawi, and i was the only one who was not," said the Minister at the Taman Benjamin Suaeb Building, Jakarta, Friday (06/03/2020).

Also present at the event were Secretary General of the Ministry of Social Affairs Hartono Laras, Director General of Social Ministry Social Rehabilitation Harry Hikmat, and Director General of Social Protection and Social Security Pepen Nazaruddin, Chairman of the Covid-19 Task Force Bamus Betawi Muhammad Rifky, the General Chairman of Bamus Betawi Abraham Lunggana, who was fondly called Haji Lulung, and the Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Riza Patria.

A the Bamus Betawi event, the Minister of Social Affairs said those who were in it were brothers. So that the distribution of Social Aid is also not without reason, other than as the responsibility of the Ministry of Social Affairs, also because it provides assistance to people.

"Bamus Betawi, my brothers. It means that it is in the midst of my brothers and sisters that I just happened to be the Minister of Social Affairs. Pray for me that I can become a good minister for the next five years," he said.

Furthermore, Juliari also shared his experiences in becoming Social Minister. He said Indonesia had been affected by Covid-19 for almost four months, and in addition three months had passed through the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB). At that time there were certainly a variety of risks but now according to him it must be relaxed.

"There are those who go home with money and some who do not carry anything," said the Minister.

He also shared stories of is visits of locations affected by Covid-19. There are those who tell him if Work From Home, or at home it's nice if the big house. But it cannot be denied, there are also those who have small houses and "humps and bumps".

"So it is the obligation of the Ministry of Social Affairs to help the citizens of DKI, because we feel sorry for the citizens. If DKI is successful against Covid-19, it means that Indonesia is also successful against Covid-19," said the Minister.

The Minister of Social Affairs then prayed for citizens to be given a blessing and health, especially in dealing with Covid-19. "We can face it together," he continued.
