PERTH, NNC - Professor Dr. David Goodall, a professor of academics from Perth, Western Australia asked for the gift of death while celebrating his 104th birthday.
"I deeply regret having reached this age, I prefer 20 or 30 years younger," he said, as quoted by Australia Plus.
Accompanied by his family and friends at his daughter's home, Goodall delivered something more important than his age. He has been a member of the advocacy group Exit International for 20 years and plans to spend the rest of his life campaigning for the approval of voluntary euthanasia or assisted suicide in Western Australia.
"Old people like me should have full citizenship rights including the right to assisted suicide," Goodall said.
Goodall became international attention in 2016 when he reached the age of 102 years old. The university where he worked asks him to vacate his office immediately because he was considered a safety risk.
He opposed the decision. After getting a public reaction, the university canceled the decision. In the last few years his physical condition has deteriorated, as does the quality of his life.
His worsening eyesight also stopped him from performing various academic work tasks, such as reading e-mail. Meanwhile, most of his colleagues also have long since died.
