JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Most people often link late menstrual or periods as a symptom of pregnancy. While that is true, it is also important to know that there may be other reasons as well for late menstruation cycles.
Many women experience irregular menstrual cycle despite not being pregnant. Some experience irregular cycle in beginning of menstruation, and others at the menopause stage. Here's another cause of late or delayed periods, as reported by Boldsky:
When you are under physical or mental pressure, your body produces stress hormones. Increased levels of this hormone can affect the reproductive system and in extreme cases can also temporarily stop the activity of the reproductive system. In such cases, your menstruation is also delayed.
Drugs and Medicines
One of the most common drugs that cause menstrual changes and delay in the period is birth control pills. Hormonal contraceptives stop the body from ovulating. If there is no ovulation, there is no period. Emergency contraception can also cause periods to be delayed or missed. Other drugs that can cause delayed or missed periods are antidepressants, some antipsychotics, corticosteroids and chemotherapy drugs.
The thyroid gland located in your neck regulates your metabolism. It interacts with many other systems in our body to keep things running smoothly. Any type of thyroid imbalance, be it hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, can have implications on your menstruation. An overactive thyroid, also called hyperthyroidism, can cause periods to become lighter and rarer, while an underactive thyroid, also called hypothyroidism, can cause periods to be less frequent but more severe.
