How to Treat and Care for CRT Device on Heart Failure Patient (netralnews)

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Pacemaker (CRT) is a therapy using small devices that are installed to restore the motion of the heart walls to be more synchronous. CRT is a recommended tool for symptomatic advanced heart failure patients that have a;ready received optimal pharmacological heart failure therapy.

There are two CRTs available in Indonesia, the first conventional CRT and Multipoint CRT. CRT Multipoint has the potential to be more easily applied to patients with heart failure, and is safe in performing MRI procedures.

Simply put, heart failure patients who want to use a CRT will be installed with a pacemaker for ever. The cable is then connected to a generator under the skin that can last 8-10 years, depending on usage.

So, how to treat and maintain a CRT that is embedded in the body?

CRT expert Dr. Sunu Budhi Raharjo, PhD, SpJP (K)l, said heart failure patients who use CRTs certainly must maintain the function of the equipment properly so that it is not damaged. The part that is installed by the CRT, is advised to keep it from getting infected. This can be done through effort. The location of which the CRT is installed should be an area that is less prone to experience injuries.

"Maintain good sanination and keep any wound infection from affecting the installation site. Do not let the runway cable come off or not function, and control regularly with the patient's doctor," Dr. Sunu said recently in Jakarta.

In addition, Dr. Sunu also warned that conventional CRT users should not carry out MRI procedures. Different from CRT Multipoint users, it is said that they can do MRI and both (conventional and multipoint) must maintain hand mobility for 1 to 2 days after the installation of CRT on the body.

Prof Dr dr Yoga Yuniadi, Professor of the Faculty of Health at Universitas Indonesia, who is also a cardiologist and blood vessel expert at Columbia Asia Pulomas Hospital, said the installation of Multipoint CRT has only happened once in Indonesia. According to him, the installation results are extraordinary and free of complaints.

He said the first Multipoint CRT user was a dentist. The dentist often experienced tightness, weakness and inability to do activities.

"Now it's very good and indeed the benefits are felt. After 3 months of installation, the dentist is able to pull out teeth again," said Prof. Yoga.
