JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - The growth of gray hair is now not only in elderly people only. A new phenomenon now sees many young people who have gray hair
So what causes gray hair at a young age?
Dr. James Kirkland, director of the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging at the Mayo Clinic, says everyone have gray hair throughout their life. However, the number of gray hairs tend to increase at the age of 40 to 50 years.
"The rate of change varies, and depends on genetics, sex, and ethnicity, "said Dr. James, as quoted by nytimes.com.
He continued that it would take a longer time for Africans to get gray hair than Caucasians, while, Asians are in the middle.
Another cause for younger people to get gray hair may be due to genetics, especially if one or both parents have gray hair early in their lives.
Dr. James explained that smoking can accelerate the change in hair color. In fact, graying can be a sign of autoimmune, thyroid, or heart disease.
"If you suffer from heart disease and your hair is gray, it could be a sign that your heart disease is severe," he explained.
Dr. James then explained, can not be ascertained clearly whether stress can turn hair into gray.
"Probably, because the stress is just a hunch is not a convincing proof."
