JAKARTA, NNC - Russia President Vladimir Putin has sent a message of condolences to Indonesia President Joko Widodo in the wake of a deadly earthquake and tsunami that affected a number of areas in Central Sulawesi.
"Russia shares sadness with the Indonesian people," Putin said in a release sent by the Russian Embassy in Jakarta on Sunday (9/30) night.
President Putin expressed his sympathy and support for the families and relatives of the victims, and hoped to recover as soon as possible for the injured victims.
The 7.4-magnitude earthquake with a center at a depth of 10 kilometers at 27 kilometers northeast of Donggala, Central Sulawesi, occurred on Friday (9/28) at 17.02 Indonesian western time.
The earthquake triggered a tsunami as high as 0.5 to six meters on the west coast of Central Sulawesi.
The deadly natural disaster resulted in hundreds of deaths and injuries, and severe damage in Palu City and Donggala Regency.
Until Sunday afternoon, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded the death toll reaching 832 people, while the injured victims were 540 people.
The earthquake and tsunami also caused thousands of people to evacuate to safe locations, and tens of thousands of homes were damaged, as reported by Antara.
