KABUL, NETRALNEWS.COM -- A bomb has exploded in a mosque in the Afghanistan capital city Kabul during Friday Prayers. The bomb blast killed a senior cleric and injured at least 16 people, according to Interior Ministry officials.

The unfortunate cleric, named Mawlawi Rayhan, was one of the supporters of the Western-backed Afghan government, whom the Talibam militants had tried to overthrow.

Until now, no militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.

The blast rocked the Al-Taqwa mosque as Muslims held the Friday prayer service. As a result, at least 16 men, all of them civilians, suffered injuries.

The death toll is likely to increase, according to other officials.

"We immediately sent an ambulance to the location of the explosion," said a senior official in Kabul, as reported by Antara.
