ISLAMABAD, NETRALNEWS.COM - Former Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has been arrested on charges of corruption. Pakistani officials call this arrest a blow to the Pakistan People's Party opposition group.

Spokesperson for the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Nawazish Ali confirmed to Reuters that Zardari was detained, but did not provide further information.

Local media channels said NAB was detaining Zardari under their investigation into a number of fake bank accounts and money laundering.

The former president could not be contacted for comment, but he denied making a mistake regarding the case. The PPP party accused the case that ensnared it was full of politics.

A widower of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, Zardari spent 11 years in prison on charges of corruption and murder before becoming president in 2008. He was never convicted and denied any wrongdoing.
