YAOUNDE, NETRALNEWS.COM - About 300 suspected Boko Haram guerrillas have raided an island on Lake Chad, which is on the northern tip of Cameroon, on Sunday (9/9/2019). As a result of the attack, dozens of residents were reported killed.

"As many as 24 people were killed, including 16 Cameroonians who were placed at military posts on the island," a number of officials said on Wednesday (09/12/2019).

According to local military sources, the death toll in Darak District, about 1,000 km from the capital city of Yaounde, was one of the most sadistic violent armed attacks carried out by Boko Haram in Cameroon in a few years.

"The attackers arrived by boat and immediately attacked eight military posts on the island," Mayor Darak Ali Ramat told Reuters.

The Ministry of Defense reported that 64 Boko Haram militiamen were also killed in a shootout which lasted several hours.

Boko Haram has been fighting for a decade to establish a Caliphate based in Nigeria.
