JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Mexican teenage football player Joao Maleck has been detained for six months on Tuesday (06/25/2019), after being found guilty of murder in a car accident that killed a newly married couple.

As quoted from AFP, on Wednesday (6/26/2019), a judge in Guadalajara, the city where Maleck lives, refused bail for the football player - who plays in the Spanish second division club Atletico - after deciding he risked running away.

Prosecutors said Maleck, 20, was driving under the influence of alcohol when his Ford Mustang crashed into a small car in Guadalajara early Sunday, killing both people inside.

The victims - 33-year-old Alejandro Castro and 26-year-old Fernanda Pena - were married the day before, and were on their way to makeup artists for their reception that day, relatives said.

"The force of the crash hurled the car two blocks from home when the accident happened," Castro's cousin Haydee Martinez said to reporters.

Maleck is the son of a retired French-Cameroon soccer player Jean-Claude Maleck, who played in Guadalajara - Mexico's second city - for Tecos FC in the 1990s.

Born in Mexico, Maleck, who is also French and Cameroonian, has been playing for the past five years in Europe.
