NEW YORK, NETRALNEWS.COM - The NBA ensures that the exhibition match in Shanghai would be conducted on Thursday (10/10/2019). Previously it was rumored that the game had been doubted to go on after an NBA team executive sparked a dispute related to free speech.
"The Lakers and Nets will face each other in the China NBA match in Shanghai which starts tonight at 19:30," the NBA said in its verified social media account in China.
An NBA representative also confirmed that the match would still be held.
Earlier the Chinese state-owned television channel CCTV suspended plans to broadcast two NBA pre-season games in China as a result of the NBA executive's tweet in support of demonstrators in Hong Kong.
"We believe that any comments that challenge national sovereignty and social stability are not within the scope of freedom of speech," China Central Television (CCTV) said on its social media account some time ago.
"For this purpose, the CCTV Sports Channel has decided to immediately suspend plans to broadcast the NBA pre-season (China Games) and will immediately investigate all cooperation and communication involving the NBA."
The NBA faced an escalating counterattack in China over the tweet last week by Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey who expressed support for demonstrators in Hong Kong's semi-autonomous regions who had staged increasingly violent demonstrations demanding greater freedom.
The NBA said that it would not apologize for Morey's actions because his tweet was considered part of Morey's freedom of expression.
There are two annual NBA exhibition matches in China, which this year features the Los Angeles Lakers against the Brooklyn Nets.
