JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM – Jane Cindy, MPSi, child psychologist from Pondok Indah Bintaro Hospital, says parents need to consider the stages of literacy development phase based on the theory on progress of children.
"Appropriate stimulation needs to be given in accordance with the stages in a child’s age," Jane said in Jakarta.
At the age of zero to three years, parents should consistently provide stimulation in the form of reading children's story books.
In reading the story books, Jane suggests parents use sound volume that sounds clear with intonation that matches the content of the sentence. This is to stimulate children's interest in books and reading activities.
The ideal book that is read at that stage is a colored picture book with large-sized text and short sentences.
"At the age of three to six years, the child can be stimulated in the form of recognition of letters and numbers. The child learns to connect the shape of the letter that is seen with the sound of letters," she said.
At that stage, the child should begin to be given the opportunity to use a variety of stationery such as pencils, color markers and crayons to doodle and draw. It is to stimulate the child's soft motoric moves.
Children begin to be stimulated by reading and writing should start at the age of six years and over by considering the readiness of children.
"One of the signs of readiness of children to read is the child being interested in the book, happy to listen to stories that are read from books and have mastered the introduction of the alphabet in the form of connecting the shape and the sound of the letter," Jane added.
