Hoax: Red Onions or Shallots Can Absorb Coronavirus (productlist)

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - There are several posts on social media which claims that onion can absorb viruses, one of which is the covid-19 coronavirus. However, it turns out that the information is hoax or not true.

The myth of this claim has been discussed and disclosed by the National Onion Association (NOA). NOA is an organization representing farmers, traders, exporters, and importers of shallots or red onions in the United States that has operated since 1913.

In an article, the site explains that raw onions that are slied and placed in a room to absorb germs and poisons, are just a myth.

"There is no scientific evidence that sliced raw onions can absorb germs or relieve air from poisons," the article said.

According to the article, the myth has indeed been legendary, and has spread throughout the world.

According to the monitoring of Netralnews, "Benefits of Shallots that Can Absorb the Virus" is a recurring hoax that was clarified on 15 February 2019.

As reported from Hoax Slayer, Dr. Joe Schwarcz of McGill University's Office of Science and Society noted that onions as "bacterial magnets" made no sense.

An article on The Chemist's Kitchen's website about the ability of onions to absorb bacteria also agreed with Dr. Schwarcz's view. The article said that onions cannot absorb bacteria or viruses.
