PHOENIX, NETRALNEWS.COM - Phoenix Suns has officially signed a new head coach. Monty Williams, former assistant coach of the Philadelphia 76ers was appointed as their new head coach. He replaced Igor Kokoskov, who had been sacked some time ago.

Williams became the seventh head coach in eight years of Robert Sarver's ownership of the club.

"I am honored to be the head coach of the Phoenix Suns and thank Robert Sarver and (general manager) James Jones for his trust in me," Williams said.

"I also thank the 76ers for their support throughout this process and remain committed to pursuing the goals we all want to achieve this season."

Williams will join the Suns after the 76ers complete their playoff period. The 76ers now lead 2-1 over the Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Williams has also been a candidate for the Los Angeles Lakers head coach.

The Suns ended the season with the worst West Team status after winning 19-63.

Williams (47) is the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans from 2010 to 2015 with a win-lose record 173-221. In five seasons, Pelicans twice reached the playoffs which all fell in the first round.

Williams has also been an assistant to the Portland Trail Blazers (from 2005 to 2010) and the Oklahoma City Thunder (2015-2016) before becoming an assistant to the 76ers coach under head coach Brett Brown in June last year.
