In recent months, the health of the F1 legend has indeed suffered from health problems. The winner of three Formula 1 world championships suffered a disruption in his lungs so he had to get a lung transplant. Lauda also had been treated for 10 days in January because of influenza.

"With deep sadness, we announce that my beloved Niki has died peacefully, in the midst of his family, on Monday," said an official family statement, as reported by the Austrian news agency.

"His unique achievement as an athlete and businessman will not be forgotten. His relentless spirit to act, his candor, and courage remain felt."

"He is a role model and benchmark for all of us, he is a loving, caring husband and father, who is far from the public spotlight. And he will be missed."

Lauda is one of the most successful riders in F1. He won the world title three times in the 1975, 1977 and 1984 seasons. Lauda had a fatal accident which left him almost killed in the 1976 season. Amazingly, after the accident his appearance did not decline and even able to appear as world champion in 1977 and 1984 .

The accident was the beginning of Lauda's health problems. His lungs were damaged because they were filled with toxic smoke. He also suffered serious burns including the face and had a coma.

After retiring from the race track, Lauda was also a businessman in the field of aviation and had a pilot license. He had founded Lauda Air in 1979, which was later sold in the 1990s.

After not being a racer, Lauda is still pursuing a career in F1. He was a consultant for Ferrari, became head of the Jaguar F1 team, and became a Non-Executive Chairman of Mercedes F1 in 2012.
