BIRMINGHAM, NETRALNEWS.COM - World number one women's tennis player Naomi Osaka has advanced to the second round of the Birmingham Classic on Tuesday (6/18/2019) local time, but had to go the extra mile to win a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Maria Sakkari of Greece.

As quoted from the official WTA website on Wednesday (6/19/2019), Osaka admitted at a pre-tournament press conference that she still felt uncomfortable on the grass field.

However, she started well in her first match since losing in the third round of the French Open. Osaka broke Sakkari's service three times in the first set.

However,  the world number 33 Sakkari fought back in the second set to take the match to the deciding set.

Osaka needed to prevent five break points in the fifth game to lead 3-2, but then immediately grabbed the only break in the final set.

Yulia Putintseva will face Osaka in the second round after defeating Harriet Dart with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Former French Open champion Jeena Ostapenko will play a second round match against Johanna Konta of England after bagging a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Iga Swiatek.

World number three Karolina Pliskova will face her twin sister Kristyna Pliskova in the next round after Kristyna defeated Viktoriya Tomova 6-3, 6-4.
