NEW YORK CITY, NETRALNEWS.COM - United States women's tennis player Serena Williams had to struggle to get past the second round of the US Open. Facing compatriot Catherine McNally, the holder of six US Open titles had to fight three games with a score of 5-7, -3, 6-1, on Thursday (29/08/2019).
"This [match] was incredible because I was able to win when I was not playing optimally, faced a great tennis player, and I was still able to get through it," Serena said to wtatennis.com.
With this victory, the eighth seed managed to maintain a perfect record in the second round match at the US Open with a winning record of 19-0.
In the first round match, Serena also recorded a 19-0 victory when she defeated Maria Sharapova.
"Surely no one likes to have a difficult match, but after looking back, I was able to enjoy a difficult match," she said after the match.
The former world number one finished the match in an hour and 54 minutes with 32 winners, including ten aces, and 28 errors of her own. Williams won 81 percent points in her first serve, and broke McNally four times from 12 break points.
"I made a lot of mistakes in the first two sets. That's too much. You can't win the tournament making a lot of mistakes. I know I have to play better, and I know I can," Serena added.
In the third round, Serena, who has already won 23 Grand Slams, will face either 29th seed Hsieh Su-wei from China Taipei or Czech tennis player Karolina Muchova.
