DIRIYAH, NETRALNEWS.COM - Andy Ruiz Jr, the holder of heavyweight championship titles from three world boxing bodies, says he is confident on still being able to defeat Anthony Joshua when the two boxers fight again on December 7, 2019.
"I will make history and win the same way as I did on June 1, and prove that everyone is wrong," Ruiz said at a press conference session in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, as quoted by BBC.
Ruiz defeated Joshua in the seventh round at their first meeting in New York. That was one of the biggest upsets in the history of heavyweight boxing.
The US boxer, who fought by carrying the Mexican flag, has received a lot of criticism since defeating Joshua. He was accused of not taking his physical condition seriously.
Since the victory in New York, Ruiz has indeed spoiled himself. He bought a new house and a Rolls-Royce luxury car, as he showed them social media.
However, the 29-year boxer insists he still has hunger and is not unaware of his popularity.
"I don't want 15 minutes of fame. I want it to last forever. I want to be a champion for years to come. He will try to win these belts, but we will train very hard for December 7," he added.
Meanwhile, Joshua promised the glory of his opponent would not be long, and he could not wait to immediately maximize the opportunities he had.
"Andy is currently a champion, but that will only last until December 7 when he loses his title," Joshua claimed.
The second fight between Ruiz and Joshua will be held in Saudi Arabia. The choice of the location of this match raises questions for many people, but match promoter Eddie Hearn stressed that this was an extraordinary moment for boxing.
"This is a monumental opportunity for our sport. Sometimes our sport is very narrow-minded - there is a world out there. This is a monumental opportunity for sport (boxing)," Hearn said.
