MADRID, NETRALNEWS.COM - Spain central defender Sergio Ramos is finally able to equal the record for most appearances for the Spanish national team that has been held by Iker Casillas.
As of Monday (9/9/2019), Ramos has played 167 matches for the Spanish national team when he played in the European Cup 2020 qualifying match against the Faroe Islands.
In the match, Spain coach Roberto Moreno made nine changes to team members from the team that won 2-1 over Romania. Ramos and Rodrigo Moreno were the two players who were not replaced from Friday's match. Spain swept aside Faroe Islands with a 4-0 victory.
Ramos first played for Spain on March 26, 2005, when he was 18 years old 361 days. At that time the Spanish national team won 3-0 over China in a friendly match.
He then helped Spain through one of the best periods in their football history from 2008 to 2012.
The former Sevilla player was a key member when La Roja won the 2008 and 2012 European Cups, and the 2010 World Cup.
Ramos recorded his 100th appearance for the national team in 2013. He entered the Spanish team that competed in the 2014 World Cup a year later, although Spain's dominance had to end where they were eliminated in the group phase.
The position of Spain's first choice goalkeeper was taken over by David de Gea from Casillas at the 2016 European Cup.
Thus Ramos was asked to be the team captain, and under his leadership Spain was able to complete the group phase by occupying second place. Unfortunately in the round of 16, Spain must recognize the benefits of Italy.
After contributing 21 goals for Spain, Ramos approached the record for most international goals recorded by the defender. He also approached the record of Gianluigi Buffon's performance at the European Cup, where he only needed nine more matches to surpass the legendary goalkeeper.
Before the game against the Faroe Islands, Ramos received respect from his team mates. Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets, who often rubbed against him in the Spanish League, said that it was an honor to have Ramos as team captain.
Spain are favored to get a place in the 2020 European Cup. They have recorded six wins from six qualifying matches and are solid at the top of Group F with 18 points.
