PARIS, NETRALNEWS.COM - Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been called up to the France national football squad to replace injured Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi for the 2020 European Cup qualifying matches later this month.
Matuidi was diagnosed with a rib injury after a medical examination in Turin on Monday, after playing for 70 minutes in a 1-0 win in Serie A over AC Milan.
"Matuidi conducted an MRI scan today, and the scan showed fracture of the 10th rib," Juvenus said, as reported by beIN Sports on Tuesday (11/12/2019).
"Unfortunately, I have withdrawn from the (France) squad," Matuidi wrote earlier on his Twitter account.
"However, I'm sure France will qualify. I'm looking forward to returning for the next match," Matuidi said
The French Football Federation has confirmed that Guendouzi will join the Les Bleus squad at Clairefontaine on Tuesday.
The 2018 World Cup champions will qualify for the 2020 European Cup from Group H if they defeat Moldova in Paris on Thursday, or if Iceland fails to win against Turkey.
"Historically, qualifications have never been easy for Les Bleus," France squad manager Didier Deschamps told reporters on Tuesday.
"We only took one point out of six against Turkey, but the main objective is to qualify."
France are scheduled to finish their qualifying campaign with an away match against Albania on November 17.
