SYDNEY, NETRALNEWS.COM - Non-seeded 15-year-old United States women's tennis player Coco Gauff has defeated reigning champion Naomi Osaka in the third round of the Australian Open in two straight sets on Friday (1/24/2020).
As reported on the official website of the WTA, Gauff, who made her debut in Melbourne this year, defeated the third-seeded Osaka 6-3, 6-4.
Osaka is the third former champion who was eliminated from the tournament, after Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki, who won titles in 2017 and 2018 respectively, lost their successive matches at Melbourne Park earlier on the same day.
Gauff, who lost to Osaka easily 3-6, 0-6 at last year's US Open, avoided a repeat of the defeat when a series of backhand errors from Osaka gave Gauff a break in the middle of the opening set.
The pattern repeated itself in the second set, as Osaka continued to make mistakes and Gauff served for victory after only 67 minutes on the court.
