MELBOURNE, NETRALNEWS.COM - Rafael Nadal had to go through a grueling fourth-round match for three hours and 38 minutes against host Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4), before finally qualifying for the quarter-finals of the 2020 Australia Open.
"This was a very tiring match. At first I was in control, but you can never fully control (the game) if you face Nick. When I make a mistake in service, then he takes a gap, it will be difficult to break his service again," Nadal said , as reported by atptour.com, Monday, (01/27/2020).
The first-ranked Spaniard added to his 5-3 win over Kyrgios, as well as a score on the hard court with a 2-2 draw.
In the early months of the 2020 season, Nadal has won a total of eight wins from 10 matches he played, which began in the ATP Cup tournament with the Spanish team two weeks ago.
In this tournament, Nadal also had hopes of creating the 20th Grand Slam title, to match Roger Federer (Switzerland), as well as being the first male tennis player in the Open Era to win all four major tournaments on several occasions. He reached the final of the Australian Open five times and lifted the trophy in 2009.
In the last eight, Nadal will face Dominic Thiem from Austria.
"Tomorrow will be fierce, we already know each other equally well. He (Thiem) has a good character and a pretty difficult competitor. I have to play well, but it feels like I'm ready for it. I've played well against Pablo (Carreno Busta) two days ago and tonight also faced one of the best tennis players in the world. I hope tomorrow can be as expected," Nadal said.
