JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Europe's football authority UEFA has officially announced the postponement of the European Cup or Euro 2020 to next year, as an effort to prioritize health due to the coronavirus or Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition to easing unnecessary pressure on public service providers when the event is being held, the delay will also give domestic leagues and European club competitions in the 2019/20 season to be completed.
UEFA has already formed a working group to re-schedule domestic and European competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League so that the competitions can be ended in the 2019/2020 season.
In addition to announcing the postponement of Euro 2020, UEFA also stressed that all competitions and matches (including trials) at the club level as well as the national team, men's and women's in UEFA's jurisdictions were suspended until further announcements.
The Euro 2020 playoff matches, which were scheduled to be conducted this month, were also postponed to early June while paying attention to a review of the situation later.
"As the governing body of European football, it is important for UEFA to lead and make the biggest sacrifice," UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said in a statement released on UEFA's official website on Tuesday.
"Moving the Euro 2020 schedule certainly costs a lot for UEFA, but we will do our best to maintain funding for the development of grassroots and women's soccer in 55 unaffected countries," he added.
UEFA proposes June 11 to July 11, 2021 as the latest European Cup schedule, while ensuring ticket owners and clients are protected by the right to the tournament next year.
