JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Roger Federer and his wife have donated one million Swiss Francs or around IDR16.5 billion rupiah to families affected by the coronavirus pandemic in Switzerland.
The former world number one followed in the footsteps of a number of global sports figures to help deal with the coronavirus outbreak that has infected more than 420,000 people worldwide and killed at least 18,000 people.
"These are difficult times for everyone and no one should be ignored," Federer said through his Twitter account on Wednesday (3/25/2020).
"Mirka and I personally decided to donate one million Swiss Francs to the most vulnerable families in Switzerland. Our contribution is just the beginning. We hope that others can help more families in need. Together we can overcome this crisis," he said.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion is now recovering from a knee injury he suffered last month, and is targeting to return to play for Wimbeldon in June.
However, the tennis season was postponed until June 7 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In addition to Federer, Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola each donated one million euros or around IDR17.4 billion to help clinics and health centers fight the coronavirus outbreak.
As reported by Antara, Portuguese and Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo and his agent Jorge Mendes have also donated medical equipment to a number of hospitals in Portugal.
