NEW YORK, NETRALNEWS.COM - Pharmaceutical companies Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE said on Thursday (10/28/2021) that they expect to ship 50 million more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to the United States (US) government by the end of April, as the country prepares to vaccinate children.
The move comes after an outside advisory panel of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voted on Tuesday (10/26) to recommend authorizing the vaccine in children aged 5-11 years.
The FDA's decision on administering the vaccine to this age group is still pending, as reported by Reuters.
If allowed and recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advisory panel, the two companies hope to ship the vaccine soon, at a dose of 10 micrograms for children, as directed by the US government.
So far, the US government has secured 600 million doses of the vaccine for domestic use, and an additional one billion doses for donation to low-middle-income countries.
The two companies expect preliminary clinical trial data on the use of the vaccine in children, aged 2-5 years and 6 months-2 years, to be out in the fourth quarter of this year, or early in the first quarter of 2022, as reported by Antara.
