VATICAN CITY, NETRALNEWS.COM - Pope Francis has appeared in public for the first time on Sunday (07/18/2021) since returning to the Vatican after spending 11 days in hospital.

He conveyed the importance of taking a break and taking a break from the stresses of modern life.

"Let's take a break from the busyness dictated by our agenda. Let's learn to rest, turn off our cell phones," the Pope said in his weekly sermon from his window overlooking St. Peter's Square.

The 84-year-old pope underwent surgery to remove part of his large intestine on July 4, the first time he has experienced serious health problems in his eight years leading Catholics around the world, as reported by Reuters.

He returned to the Vatican on Wednesday, where he was assisted by assistants to get out of his car.

He appeared to be in good health on Sunday, speaking in a voice that was quite clear though not as loud as he usually was before his hospitalization. He made no mention of his treatment during the sermon.

Hundreds of people gathered in the sunny square and cheered when Pope Francis appeared at the window.

As usual, at the end of his sermon Pope Francis touched on a number of important events happening in the world.

He urged an end to mass unrest in South Africa and called for peace and dialogue in Cuba after an unprecedented series of protests rocked the communist party-ruled country.

"I am also close to loved ones in Cuba at a difficult time like this, especially with families who are suffering so much," Francis said.

He also mentioned the massive floods in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands that killed more than 180 people, as reported by Antara.
