Social Affairs Minister Urges Residents Living on the Banks of Kapuas River to be On Alert for La Niña

SANGGAU REGENCY, NETRALNEWS.COM - Indonesian Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini has asked residents to be aware of the influence of La Niña which has an impact on high rainfall and also causes floods.
"We are facing the impact of La Niña, which causes higher rainfall every year. Therefore, all residents must remain alert," said Tri Rismaharini, also known as Risma.
The statement was made by Social Affairs Minister Risma when greeting flood victims and providing ATENSI assistance for the elderly and disabled at RT 26, Liku Village, Beringin Village, Kapuas District, Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan, on Wednesday (11/03/2021).
In this location, there were 139 families whose houses were flooded in the last few days after the Kapuas River overflowed as a result of heavy rainfall, as compared to previous years.

Risma said it is quite challenging to anticipate climate change. However, the most important thing is how to save the residents along the Kapuas River, which at any time can be flooded again.
"Looking at the existing conditions, efforts need to be made to reactivate the lakes along the Kapuas River so that when the rainfall is high, the water flow does not pass through residential areas," she said.
In addition to handing over aid for disaster victims, the Ministry of Social Affairs has also prepared field public kitchens to meet the logistical needs of flood victims.
"We are very ready. The problem is not only public kitchens, but how to make sure that when a disaster occurs there are no victims, and we can maximize the usage of locations, such as the school I saw earlier," said Risma.
The assistance that has been given to Sanggau Regency is as follows: 156 children's food packages; 30 packs of family kits; 40 kidswear; 40 foodware; 50 packages of family kitchen utensils; 50 sheets of red mattress; 100 sheets of mattress; 40 sheet tent rolls; 30 sheets of velbed; 1 unit of family multipurpose tent; 1 unit of red multipurpose tent; and 2,000 kg of rice.
Plus 54 pieces of clothes for toddlers; Adult clothes 110 pieces; 49 pieces of children's clothes; and 17 pieces of children's toys,12 packs of diapers for children; 16 pcs adult diapers; and 300 packages of basic necessities so that the total aid for Kab. Sanggau is IDR 496,632,812
In addition to aid for flood victims, the Social Affairs Minister also delivered ATENSI assistance worth IDR117,000,000, consisting of 50 packages of decent living needs; entrepreneurship assistance to five Beneficiaries (PM), ATENSI assistance for tools to 20 recipients; and Support for Fulfilling Decent Living Needs for 50 recipients.
One of the residents, Grandma Salamah (80), was touched because she had received food assistance from the Minister of Social Affairs which was handed over directly and it really helped her family's needs.
"I'm very happy to be able to get basic food assistance, because it's been a few days since the house has been flooded. Thank you again," said Grandma Salamah.
After visiting Sanggau Regency, Risma moved to greet and provide assistance to disaster victims in Sekadau Regency.
The assistance for disaster victims in Sekadau Regency is in the form of; 156 children's food packages; 30 packs of family kits; 40 kids ware; 40 foodware; 50 packages of family kitchen utensils; 50 sheets of red mattress; 100 sheets of mattress; 40 sheets of red roll tent; 30 sheets of velbed; 1 unit of family multipurpose tent; 1 unit of red multipurpose tent; and 3,000 kg of rice.
Plus 54 clothes for toddlers; adult clothes 111 pieces; 48 pieces of children's clothes. Children's toys 17 Pcs; 12 packs of diapers for children; adult diapers 16 Pcs; and 350 food packages. So that the total assistance for Kab. Sekadau worth IDR468,198,412
The ATENSI assistance provided in Sekadau Regency is IDR101,430,150, comprising of 100 packages of basic food assistance, 1 unit of wheelchair, 1 package of sewing machine, 1 unit of tripod, assistance for 11 orphans, as well as assistance for basic needs and education for 38 people.
Moreover, the Minister of Social Affairs also provided disaster relief assistance in Sintang District with a total aid of IDR653,783,626 as follows; 6 units of squad tents; 10 platoon tents; 14 family tents; 3 refugee tents; 1 communal kitchen tent; 90 velved; 24 life vests; 80 mattresses; 45 family kits; 76 kidsware.
A total of 67 food ware; 780 biscuits/ready food; 2 umbrella family tents; 45 mattresses; 1 family multipurpose tent; 462 children's meal packages; 61 packages of family kitchen utensils; 40 red roll tents; 1 unit of red family multipurpose tent; 76 red blankets; and 90 sheets of red mattress.
For ATENSI assistance given to residents of Sintang district worth IDR15,500,000 in the form of entrepreneurship assistance and assistance for basic needs.
During her working visit this time, the Minister of Social Affairs continued to move to Melawi district to see the impact of the flood, greeted the victims and ordered her staff to immediately distribute aid for flood victims.
In handling disasters on the location site, the Ministry of Social Affairs collaborates and synergizes with the Provincial Government of West Kalimantan, district governments that were hit by floods, and Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives. Also, the Ministry of Social Affairs will coordinate with the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) to address the flood problem in West Kalimantan Province.
