JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - The COVID-19 pandemic has not prevented the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs from providing respect, protection and fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities.
Coinciding with the commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities (HDI) 2021, the Ministry of Social Affairs is strengthening the establishment of an inclusive and accessible environment for persons with disabilities.
“The Ministry of Social Affairs takes sides with persons with disabilities by strengthening three strategies, namely strengthening an inclusive environment, reducing inequality, and growing leadership from people with disabilities," said Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini during a press conference at the 2021 HDI commemoration series in Jakarta, on Wednesday (12/01/2021).
According to the Minister of Social Affairs, an inclusive environment is needed so that persons with disabilities can actively participate in various fields of life.

"The commemoration of HDI in 2021 must be a momentum to ensure that wherever you are, the environment must be friendly to people with disabilities," she said.
A friendly environment that provides fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities is expected not only to be expanded in the public sphere. But it is no less important in the field of citizens' constitutional rights, such as education.
“I hope that even public schools can accept people with disabilities. This is my dream. Because I believe, behind a person's shortcomings, there are also advantages. I am sure that our brothers and sisters with disabilities are not inferior to non-disabled people,” said the Minister of Social Affairs.
The Ministry of Social Affairs also continues to reduce the conditions of inequality faced by persons with disabilities. One of the steps taken by the Ministry of Social Affairs under the leadership of Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini is to develop technological innovations.
“Our brothers and sisters who have cerebral palsy, physical or sensory disabilities are blind, we provide assistive devices. These tools are given a touch of technological innovation, thus helping their mobility,” said the Minister of Social Affairs.
For people with cerebral palsy, the Ministry of Social Affairs provides assistive devices, one of which is a biotechnical wheelchair. With the help of the tool, said the Minister of Social Affairs, it is hoped that people with cerebral palsy who used to just lie down can sit, or even move more freely.
For persons with visual impairments, the Ministry of Social Affairs has developed an adaptive guide stick. The adaptive wand features water, fire, object and GPS sensors.
“These are all developed by people with disabilities. Don't get me wrong, their work is more refined and precise," said the Minister of Social Affairs.
With the use of technology above, it is possible for people with disabilities to be productive and participate more actively in all areas of life.
No less important, the Ministry of Social Affairs together with other institutions and the wider community, continue to encourage and strengthen the space for leadership growth and development of the young generation of people with disabilities. This is a form of recognition of the principle of equality that persons with disabilities are active elements of various decision-making processes.
"Therefore, the commemoration of HDI in 2021 is not just a ceremony. But the momentum shows their real work, and how we ensure the creation of an environment that supports the fulfillment of their rights," said the Minister of Social Affairs.
The HDI 2021 commemoration internationally takes the theme “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-Covid-19 world.” .
In an emergency atmosphere of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Social Affairs will hold the 2021 HDl commemoration by complying with health protocols, and involving central and regional elements by limiting face-to-face attendance, and the rest through online channels.
In the series of HDl 2021 commemorations, various activities were held, namely publications and outreach, webinar series, exhibitions, handing over of attention assistance, inclusion celebrations, social counseling and painting, and the 2021 HDI Peak event, namely the inauguration of the National Commission for Disability (KND) commissioners.
