JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Studies have revealed that there is an increase in dry eye symptoms among young patients due to prolonged exposure to digital devices.

Amber Gaume Giannoni, optometry specialist with the College of Optometry at the University of Houston, said that the longer the children look at the screen, they tend to blink less often. This results in dry eyes because blinking helps stimulate the glands used to moisturize the eyes.

The study also showed that children aged eight years can spend six hours a day in front of the screen, as reported by Xinhua.

Giannoni suggested that parents limit watch time on gadgets for their children and notice symptoms such as red eyes, rubbing eyes and flickers that look forced.

She also recommends a 20-20-20 method to reduce eye strain - rest 20 seconds every 20 minutes staring at a digital device, and watch with a distance of 20 feet (about six meters) or from afar.
